Women in Science at Isla Mar: Giovanna Gonzalez

For Women's History Month this March, we're celebrating Isla Mar's women in science! Dive in as we get to know what inspires them, what energizes them, and what gives them hope for the future.

Meet Giovanna Gonzalez Colmenares | Marine Scientist

Hello! My name is Giovanna Gonzalez Colmenares and I am a master's student in Biology working on researching the use of environmental eDNA as a tool to locate fish aggregations.

Why do you love the ocean?

I love the ocean for its diversity, its organisms, and the associations that occur in it.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of what I do is knowing that I am doing my part to save and protect this species.

Tell us about fish aggregations

Many of these aggregations are of great economic importance, which is why they are being overfished, and at the same time, their populations are reducing. This is why it is of utmost importance to locate them in order to protect them and maintain a healthy marine ecosystem.
